Our yearly retreat is quite the special occasion for a number of reasons – it is a time to explore a new country, an opportunity to get to know fellow colleagues better, and last but not least, an occasion for everyone under the Netccentric family to come together regardless of which country you’re based in.
Given that we’ve been back from Guangzhou for a while now, I won’t go into the details of a day-on-day recount of what happened there. If you happen to follow some of the Netccentrics on Dayre like @gilliansng and @huienloi from Singapore, @michaelcsm and @joycecsi from Malaysia or even @bossming, you'd probably already know what went on!
Instead, I gathered the responses of different Netccentrics and put together
Top Moments Everyone Enjoyed
In no particular order,
1- The weather
The temperatures were chilly at 9-18 degrees and with the overwhelming number of girls in the office, it definitely calls for OOTDs all day long! Scarves, sweaters, coats, beanies and boots, bring ‘em all on!
#ootd game strong! Our girls are clearly professionals at this 😉
Things get taken up a notch when everyone flocks in front of a camera whenever it is whipped out.
The next Netccentric girl-band. LOL.
The “throw your head back and laugh” photo HAHA
And this was us roaring in laughter after the direction from the previous shot 😂
It was a lot of fun coming together with a whole bunch of people who are great both in front and behind the camera, and even coming up with concepts for mini shoots spontaneously!
With every photo was a bonding opportunity, and the cold weather definitely supported our quest in taking the best photos we could in Guangzhou 😌
2- The river cruise
Guangzhou had an amazing skyline which we had the opportunity to witness through the river cruise. It was a myriad of colours on the water, the boats, the buildings and it was a truly dazzling sight.
As our schedules during the trip were pretty packed, the river cruise gave us some time to relax and unwind. We had good conversations on the boat, titanic re-enactments, and simply enjoyed the wind in our hair as we cruised across the Guangzhou Pearl River.
3- The shopping
Guangzhou is one of the top cities in China to develop your business in. Naturally as a consumer, you’ll be able to find a ton of gems in shopping streets and wholesale markets all around!
At Beijing Street (and henceforth at all shopping streets), we found the lifestyle items heaven, Miniso!
It was our favourite shop of all with its large assortment of items and low prices! We almost never walked out of a Miniso without buying anything. And trust me, we were in so many of those 😅
We also walked along Shang Xia Jiu Bu Xing Jie and it had everything from food, to clothes and more! If you know taobao, it was that, just you get to touch and feel everything you want to buy. It was so amazing 😍
Great shopping escapades also led to hungry people looking for good food. We went to Hai Di Lao on our first night, and it was by far the best meal and service we had all trip. Best of all, it was cheap!!
Happy people with happy tummies!
But out of all the shopping, the ultimate shopping heaven has got to be the accessories market!
Some of us even managed to buy over 10 pieces of rings, necklaces and earrings for a mere 150 yuan (~30 SGD). SCORE!!
I think the only regret was that we wished we had more time to shop 😅 Nevertheless it’s all good because we now know a good alternative for Bangkok 😏
4- Laser tag
This was one that resonated with a lot of Netccentrics!
It was an unusual form of team bonding, where you had to strategize with a team you’ve never worked with before, and aim for the other team’s backs in the dark within minutes of introducing each other!
Friendships and camaraderie were forged quickly, as we had to work closely as a team in this game. In a short period, you would be comfortable calling your teammate by name, getting them to avoid the other team who was hot on their trail from their back.
This laser tag experience even sparked off further interest of some of the Netccentrics who might consider playing laser tag in their own capacity! Definitely goes to show how much everyone enjoyed this form of team bonding! ☺️
5- The end-of-trip club visit
It was a lot of fun seeing a different side of the Netccentrics! Everyone was partying hard and even Boss came to mingle with us through drinking games like traffic light and drinking goggles 😆
The most heart warming part was that at the start of the night, everyone was segregated by country and hung out in their own groups to drink or dance. But by the end of the night, everyone was dancing together on the same dance floor as one big clique 😊
I saw @nicolevalarie from @churpmy pull @chrislovee to the dance floor where they belted hilarious moves like frying an imaginary pancake and opening an imaginary microwave (😂 try to picture that).
I personally had a taste of that too when @sammytsl and @tasejaycobs from @nuffnangmy and @nuffnangau respectively dragged me back onto the dance floor and up the podium where I was greeted with the sight of excited Thai Netccentrics dancing with hands in the air 😂
What a night!
The general consensus that Guangzhou took us by surprise. The weather was great, people were generally nice, and the experience was really pleasant. The place wasn’t half as bad as reviews we read before we left. Guangzhou gets our stamp of approval!
Thank you Netccentric for bringing all of us together from Nuffnang, Churp Churp, Nom Nom Media, Reelity TV, and Dayre from the various countries for this retreat in Guangzhou! We certainly had tons of fun getting to know everyone, cross countries and departments ☺️
With 2016 started off right, may it be a wonderful year to come for Netccentric! 🍸
