Be it escaping to somewhere far away from our bustling city or heading home to visit the family, we are most likely to opt for the fastest way to travel; by plane. However, drastically changing our environment – say, flying 30,000 feet in the air, takes a toll on our skin. When it comes to flights, especially long-haul ones, it is important for us to protect our skin. We wouldn’t want to look like a wreck when we arrive at our destinations! 😕
Let’s first look at a few ways how plane travel can affect our skin.
1️⃣ Major Dryness 😧
Fact: The average airplane has a humidity of about 20%. But our skin prefers humidity in the 40% to 70% range. 💦
Which means that the lack of humidity on an airplane will dry your skin out, and that’s probably one of the most bothersome sensation you’ve felt while flying.
Dry skin is also more likely to reveal fine lines and wrinkles, making you look older than you are. You wouldn’t want that to happen! 🙅🏻
2️⃣ Oiler Skin 🤦🏻♀️
Probably the most surprising thing about our skin’s reaction to dry air is that it doesn’t always get drier. When your skin dries out, sometimes it tries to compensates the lack of moisture by producing more oil, which results in a greasy sheen on your face.
3️⃣ Dims your perfect glow 🙎🏻
We all know how having extra blood flow to our faces give us a healthy and radiant glow. This is especially evident after an intense gym session or by spending a day outdoors, absorbing some of those sunshine. 🌞
But on a plane, that glow fades away.
Pressurized, recycled air on an airplane is typically dry, which means it pulls water off the top layer of your skin, which can lead to dryness and inflammation.
Moreover, the controlled pressure onboard an airplane reduces blood flow to your skin, which also DULLS your complexion. 🌚
4️⃣ Pimples 😩
Don’t be surprised to experience breakouts during the flight. 😲It’s all because of the previously mentioned low cabin humidity that dries out your skin. It causes oily skin to become oiler to compensate for the dryness, which can leave you landing with a face full of surprise zits. 😰
5️⃣ You can get sunburned 🌞
Yes, you can and now you know!
When you’re that high in the air, you’re closer to the sun, which expose you to event more potent UV rays. ⛅️💥Unfortunately, airplane windows aren’t built to deflect UV rays. So even though you'll be inside the plane, don’t forget the sunscreen! 🙏🏻
It is always wise to invest in a good sunscreen, one that you can use on a daily basis too.
So, how do we avoid arriving at our destination with dull and dry skin? Read on for a simple in-flight skincare routine! Wherever you're going,if you remember to protect your skin in-flight, I bet you’ll always look and feel fabulous! 💁🏼
First things first, that makeup has to come OFF. I promise you that your neighbor will be the last person to worry about your bare face 🤷🏻♀️
Don't worry about fussing with rebottling your usual makeup remover into something hand carry baggage friendly. Today's face wipe formulas are strong enough to remove every last trace, even waterproof mascara.
If you're looking for a makeup wipe recommendation, @bunbunmakeuptips reviews and recommend the Simple Micellar Cleansing Wipes!
The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin. Even if you don’t have any makeup on, do make it a point to give your face a wipe to remove any impurities. 👌🏻
“It feels delightfully refreshing, and is great for travel-imagine being on a plane for many hours, allowing your skin to breathe and keeping it hydrated are equally important –or for situations where no running water is easily available.”- @bunbunmakeuptips
With skin loving ingredients with an added vitamin, it hydrates your face leaving skin feeling clean and refreshed. 💦💧
Moisturize and Protect! 😉
Now that your face is cleansed, it’s time to hydrate and block the harmful sunrays. 😎Using your go-to moisturizing cream and sunscreen, give your face an encouraging good pat for better absorption! 🤗
For those looking for convenience,
Our beauty blogger @mongabong recommended the Miracle Bio Water SPF20 Moisturizing with sun protection. Just WOW. 😌
This will act as a moisture barrier between your face and all of that nasty recycled cabin air. Not only that, it doubles up as a sun protection with SPF20 too! Two in one! Facial Mist + SPF all in one bottle, perfect for travelling. 🙌🏻
This well-received product comes in 100ml travel friendly size so you can bring it on board the plane without it being confiscated!! That aside, it only costs $12.90. What a steal! 😼
For pimple care, 3M nexcare ance patch is highly recommended! 🙌🏻It is waterproof yet breathable, absorbs oily secretion and pus you won’t even notice.
“Love the #acnepatch from 3M Nexcare cos they don't only make my zits go away but camouflage very well”- @missgoob
Can you spot the ance patch? It took me some time to notice it. 🤔
Snooze & Mask 😴
Grab your favorite sheet mask along and use it while you snooze. 💤 Sleep is essential for your cells to regenerate, don’t get absorbed by the movies on your in-flight entertainment and make sure you get some rest! 😌
Now that your face is feeling hydrated, don’t forget to hydrate the rest of your body. Do not be afraid to ask the flight attendants for water! 💧💧Staying hydrated is the most important step in replenishing the water in your body and skin. Skip the caffeine during your flight, you'll need your sleep. 🙇🏻♀️The rule of thumb is one regular-sized bottle of water per hour in flight. (yes, really)
Remember coffee not being an ideal in-flight beverage? Once you've landed, head to the nearest Starbucks or coffee place and get your much-needed caffeine fix and congratulate yourself—you made it! 🙌🏻
That’s all for this week’s post! 😊Hope that it will have you looking fresher than ever for your next vacation! 😉
