Admit it! You know you love it 🍟
Call them fries, call them chips, call them frites — whatever you call them, fried potatoes are one of the most universally beloved junk food on earth.
It will probably have more fans than the world’s most popular political figures, expensive cars, blockbuster movies and talented sportsmen. These lovely sticks of potatoes, fried to perfection – they are just divine. 👌🏼
#funfact Did you know it was National French Fries Day yesterday? Bet you didn’t!
To celebrate our love for this goodness, here are some facts/information about fries and potatoes that you've never known 😉
Were French fries invented in France? 🤔
You’re wrong! French fries, although the name points to France, the credit is mostly given to the Kingdom of Belgium.
Here’s a short background story: The locals in Belgium often ate small fried fish. However, when the river was frozen, they used potatoes as a substitute. They cut the potatoes lengthwise and fry them in oil to replicate the shape of the small fried fish. 🤓
To be honest though, who invented French fries isn't a big deal. We love them so much that there’s even a museum (Friet Museum) dedicated to them in Belgium. Fries lover out there, do consider going for a tour if you are travelling to Belgium! ✅
So how much do Belgians love their fries? They consume the most fries per capita, of any country in Europe. On top of that, the average Belgian consumes 165 pounds of fried potatoes each year. Guess what, that’s the size of a middleweight boxer! 💪🏼
Wait what? Fries vending machine?! 😱
Vending machines have certainly up-ed their game everywhere. Japan with their famous ramen vending machines, even right here in Singapore, we have our own Vending Machine Café!
It’s no wonder that there should be a fries vending machine to satiate our late night cravings for fries other than fast food deliveries! But sadly, we don’t have one in Singapore ☹ You can find one at Central Station in Montreal, Canada. How convenient and good does it look!? 🤤
If you’re an entrepreneur, you might want to consider bringing this into Singapore for all of us fries lovers 😋
Fries and Nutritious go together ✅
Yup, you read that right. Your body needs vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, which can be found in fries!
Women may get even better benefits as B6 helps prevent bloating, menopause, and hormonal swings during the monthly cycle. What even 😱
All my fellow girlfriends out there, fries might be the savior you’ve never known 👍🏼
Not only that, potatoes have more potassium than a banana, more vitamin C than an orange, and more fiber than an apple. Fibers help pass waste from your body while potassium provides you with energy for the day.
Although claims insist fries clog your aorta, potatoes are rich in kukoamines, the molecule that lowers your blood pressure. So yes, fries can lower your blood pressure.
Shhhh….Don’t tell grandpa. 🙊
Chocolate + Pumpkin and… Fries? 🍫🎃
Guess which country has this?
Did you guess Japan? Japanese are always the most creative, quirky and weirdest ones out there. These fries are covered in chocolate and pumpkin sauce, called McChoco Potato. Apparently, this dish is to fit the theme of Halloween. Sounds delicious? Frightening? Deliciously frightening? You decide. 😏
They are out of this world 🌎
Potatoes fry faster at higher level of gravity, proving that French Fries are OUT OF THIS WORLD. But you already knew that. ✨
Craving for not just some plain boring fries? 🍟
Drop by Alther Ego that @explodingbelly recommended in one of her blog posts. Clara talks about… wait for it… PIZZA FRIES. Pepperoni, 3 cheeses and served with BACON ketchup. Enough said. The combination of pizza and fries…heavenly. 👌🏼 They also serve several other dishes that are definitely worth the try.
Just look at the tempting cheese strings 🤤🤤
How about something flavourful, spicy, sour and fragrant? 😛
You can find this unique combination at Arbite and try their TOM YAM FRIES! Aroi mak mak ☺️
They definitely had @gnitil missing the savoury goodness of their Tom Yum fries.
After reading all about fries, are you tempted to buy some? If you’re picking up a pack of frozen fries whilst grocery shopping, don’t limit yourself to the basic ketchup/chili sauce, get out of the ketchup rut and create your own dipping sauce! It won’t be difficult I promise 🤞🏼 I’m sure most ingredients are what you will already have in your kitchen.
Garlic Aioli ✅
1 cup mayonaise
1 TBS minced garlic
2 TBS lemon juice
½ tsp salt
a pinch of black pepper
Combine your ingredients together in a medium sized bowl. Stir everything together till smooth.
Tangy Ketchup Sauce 🍅
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 teaspoon vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon season salt
In a bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients. Adjust to taste as needed. You can store them in a covered container for up to 3 days.
