I am still very much thankful for my deployment this year and for the many changes that were implemented this year.
Last year with 4 graduating classes and a Sec 4 form class, it was madness. My afternoons were all taken and I felt that I don’t even have time to breath. However, with only 1 graduating class, it was indeed not as bad. I can focus more time and effort on them and clear marking faster.
I gave myself 7 days policy this year to return my markings. Let’s hope I continue to do it.
The no exams policy really does make teaching a little more flexible than before. Previously, we were always rushing and also teach to test. Graded worksheets and tests, one after the other. I felt that I was making them to do work just for a grade.
This time round, I have more time to spread out the content and also get them to do more activities. Or rather, more time for us to breath.
Previously, for just one CA, I have 2 tests, 3 graded assignments and 1 project to computate CA1.
Imagine that I only see each class for 1.5 hours in a week and I have to finish everything within 10 weeks. Minus off the PH or school events that will take away the lessons. It was a miracle that I can finish everything.
Furthermore, marking and computating for 8 classes. I nearly died.
Not that we do not need to give so many assignments now, but to term them as practice and graded assignment does make a lot of difference.
Practices are given to help them improve as they practice so that they can score well for graded assignment. Previously, everything was graded and it does not give any room for failure. If not, they will have to bear the consequences.
CA is now just 1 assignment or 1 project or 1 test. Thank god. We are not overtaxing on students and also the teachers.
Finally, I am also at my 4th year mark, it does help that I have already went through one full cycle from Sec 1 - 4. Now, Sec 5. Resources were already prepared previously and I am more or less familiar with how each lesson will be conducted. However, it also means that I may fall into the trap of not improving myself or my resources as I recycle each year.
I need to really remind myself every time to improve my resources or deliver it differently so that it benefits the students.
Now, I can finally understand why BTs usually have to stay back till so late whereas experienced teachers will always chase us home.
However, more experience also means that I have to shoulder more responsibility now. OIC of CCA, projects and more duties. Responsibility do grow when you stay longer in the same field. However, at the very least, I have some of my afternoons and evenings to myself now.
🤗 all’s well now.
It’s good to take a break from a tedious and tough 2018.
I still remember 4 years back, I really dreaded coming into this school and always telling myself that I can still transfer after 2 years.
Now, it’s been the 4th and I am still very much contented and fortunate to be in this school. I shall keep the rest of my reflection for May 25 this year as I end my bond then.
