Its school holidays! Which is secretly a holiday for me too, because I get to sleep in with the kids and no school runs, yay.Today I only went in to work for an hour to check on things, but tomorrow the kids will be shipped off to their grandparents for a stay over night. And I'll have to get back to work and catch up on today. On Thursday we might watch a movie together. I feel very lucky that I can just take time off from work whenever, just so long as the work gets done.
My sisters and I have this long running joke about me gifting them handmade gifts which will one day become family heirlooms and them telling me they would much rather receive store bought goods or money. In response to that, I told them I will gift heirloom baby quilts to my future nieces and nephews, and they WILL be able to appreciate these heirlooms and then my sisters will realise their folly and beg me for their own quilts. But it will be too late, because that ship has sailed.
Jacinda Ardern has shown this past week great strength, compassion and leadership. She makes me feel proud to be a kiwi.At her first speech after the massacre, she promised that there will be changes to the gun laws. Yesterday she delivered. She has been amazing, but so has the opposition leader (who I dont usually like much at all) who was fully supportive of it. The farmers and hunters who could have made legitimate arguments to block this, they supported the new laws as well.
It will be a week tomorrow since the devastating Christchurch massacre. We attended the vigil in Takapuna beach last Saturday. My 7 year old asked what it was for. I was at a loss for words. With my 10 year old at least we spent some time talking about it. I reminded her that while this was done by a white supremacist, white people do not have a monopoly on bigotry. There are bigots in all stripes and colours.
My latest project. A simple quilted pillowcase for my youngest. She has a very serious obsession with cats. She aspires to be a cat. Its actually quite difficult to find nice cat fabric. There is a lot a lot of quilt fabric featuring cats but none are very eye catching. That's why I snapped this one up as soon as I saw it.
My girls' primary school does not have a uniform. This used to be the norm when my sisters were in primary school back in the 90s. But now, most primary schools do have a uniform. Now that my eldest is in intermediate, she is required to wear a uniform too. It's really made me think about uniforms, why is adhering to the rules so important?
