Best Books of 2015| #backoffhaters| 大晦日

Woke up to the sound of rain, so this actually is me right now 😊 Not next to a window though. Today's gonna be a quiet day (just need to do some cooking and maybe go buy the Bake Cheesetart), so I think I'll probably Dayre about my favourite books of 2015 👍🏼

Found one review for The Nutcracker King on Amazon!!! Not sure if the person would want to be named, so I won't say anything but THANK YOU!! Having even one review means a lot to a book 😊🎉🎉🎉🎉

Favourite Books Read in 2015

According to Goodreads, I've read 128 books this year. I think if you asked me to choose, now, which was the best, the list would be very, very long. Hindsight and all that.

But, on the blog, I have a tag called 'life impacting' that I use very, very rarely. In fact, I only used it 4 times this year. So the books tagged with this will be my list for the year, because they powerful enough to have me tag that while writing the review.

1. Face to Face with Jesus by Samaa Habib

This first book, I actually read at the end of 2014, but review went up on Jan 5, 2015 so 😁

Anyway, you want to see courage in action? This lady and her family have more courage than entire countries. It takes a lot to risk death just to believe in Christ. Puts my little complaints into perspective and makes me see how trivial they are.

When I say this book is powerful, I really mean it.

2. Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

This book is basically behavioural economics, but it's super interesting and easy to understand.

I love the examples in this book, and to see economics being relevant is a 👍🏼👍🏼 for me.

One teacher recommended I read Predictably Irrational ➡️ Fooled by Randomness ➡️ The Black Swan in that order. I've only got The Black Swan to go, and the copy is already in my hands.

3. The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany

From what I've heard, this book is a huge influence on the Fantasy genre, and after reading it, I can see why. The language is beautiful. Simple beautiful. It reminds me a lot of Chesterton, but for fiction.

I could quote the whole book, but I randomly pulled up one and it is still so beautiful:

And little he knew of the things that ink may do, how it can mark a dead man's thought for the wonder of later years, and tell of happening that are gone clean away, and be a voice for us out of the dark of time, and save many a fragile thing from the pounding of heavy ages; or carry to us, over the rolling centuries, even a song from lips long dead on forgotten hills.

I want to be able to write as lyrically as this one day.

If the book has a flaw, it's that it's too dream-like, and the characters never feel real. But what a beautiful dream this book is.

I should go look for his other books.

4. The King in the Window by Adam Gopnik

I actually read this once in MG, but the book stayed with me for so long that I hunted down the title, found out it was out-of-print, and bought a second hand copy from Amazon.

This is a story about how an ordinary boy, living in a strange land, can do extraordinary things with the help of his friends. He might even become the King of the Window.

#backoffhaters - really?

Was gonna stay away from the drama because everyone has their own way of using Dayre, but cyber bullying really upsets me.

And in this picture, you can clearly see users trying to bully another user my reporting his/her page. Hope that @blog didn't actually suspend the account and that it's just a block/ignore.

As someone who's brother was terribly bullied and had to suffer the pain of standing by, one country over, while others try to save the bully (my bro is autistic, bully is not) please listen to this:

Someone telling you what you're doing wrong is not bullying.

Someone disagreeing with you is not bullying you or a hater.

I trust in the Dayre community (and all the so-called 'hate comments were deleted), so I'm gonna give that poor bullied unnamed user the benefit of the doubt.

I see that people are acknowledging that the picture are not from them and that's great. Continue that, and do what you want. We will be doing what we always do.

But do not start a campaign to label the people you don't like haters and try to shut them down.

That is bullying. #backoffhaters

Also, I just had to use this pic. Because when you get the chance, you must quote Inigo Montoya.

Now, if only I can find a way to work in "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Maybe I should start by changing my name

I was spending some time in BookOff, because I want to spend New Years Eve in a bookstore (priorities obviously right - don't worry, my Church doesn't have service), and when I wandered over to the 3DS section, I found this!!!

The Professor Layton X Ace Attorney crossover!! I basically borrowed Panda senpai's 3DS for this, so yessss!!!

Panda Senpai has spoken, and Eustacia cannot play her new game straightaway! (Sorry @bekahlime and @mangalover93)

Instead, I will be a good girl and add in more explanations for the IoT nerd's paper 👍🏼

Gonna try and finish it before I have to start making dinner! (Which is mostly daikon lol)

I just opened the shared google Docs, saw this, and started laughing.

My plan to give everyone nicknames worked! (Doitsu kun's nickname was given by sensei, and Panda Senpai has like, two nicknames. Bwahahaha. I go by ユー/ゆー (Yuu) so I guess that's already a nickname?)

Oh, and I can't remember if I mentioned it, but the IoT nerds got christened 'the Sweets team' (お菓子班) because of Christmas

Dinner!!! Photo is all foggy from the steam haha.

Anyway, the daikon dishes were made from scratch. The rest, not. And this marks the start of a night of eating hahahaha. Still gonna make tang yuan later. And I have a tiny cake 😁

Anyway, cause I'm proud of the dishes hahaha. This is Kouhaku namasu, and it's a daikon-carrot salad like thing. Only raw vegetables I'll eat 😁

And this is daikon with miso and mikan sauce. It's supposed to be miso and yuzu sauce, but I have no yuzu so I used the mikan sugar I got in Sakurajima.

My 2015

Saw the #my2015 tag floating around, and I thought it'd be fun to try. Things that happened to me this year:

1. I became a third year student and entered zemi. This was probably the biggest change in my life, because it was like going back to IB - girls were the minority. But it was a good year, because I managed to make friends (especially among the Black Zemi), and learnt a lot. I even went to Aomori for zemi related business.

2. Probably the most number of friends and family came this year. So yayyyy for that 😁😁😁

3. Travelling. I suppose I travelled quite a bit this year. Aomori, Kagoshima, Beppu, etc. Even within Fukuoka too - I managed to go to Kawachi Fujii Gardens during the best season.

4. This was also probably my most stressed year, looking at my blog posts. It also means I made a lot of sweets for my friends (natural reaction to stress). Next year, I want to manage stress better.

5. PUBLISHED A BOOK. Hahahaha can't believe it took me four items to remember this. It's a fantastic journey that just started - working with a good editor, making tons of friends, and the rush of getting sales and reviews 😄 Totally looking forward to continuing this journey in 2016.

6. Last but definitely not least, STARTED DAYRE. I've always been blogging, and I love the community, so I can't believe it took me so long to get Dayre. I've only been here for a little more than two months, but I can't imagine not having the community here. Seriously, all you Dayreans rock 😘😘😘

I think that's the round up of 2015. I've got about 4 hours of the year left, so I'm gonna watch Kouhaku (紅白) while working on the essay/one of the writing projects.

紅白 (Kouhaku)

AKB48 singing the Sailor Moon theme song (it's the anime section now). I'll probably be posting random photos as it happens.

The Pokemon one ended before I could take a photo hahahaha

They are basically singing snippets of every single famous anime song. Heard my 残酷な天使のテーゼ

So, even Mickey is making an appearance. It's a Disney medley right now, by a bunch of artists (anyone know a V6 or Perfume?)

And it seems like Arashi is going to start hosting? Or maybe they're performing soon? I have no idea hahahaha

Darth Vader has made an appearance!!

As expected of #StarWars

According to these two, Jedi knights and Samurai have a lot in common.

And a new dark force is rising. They must find new Jedis.

And the Jedis are....

Arashi 😂 (Here for their New Year Medley)

The force is strong with this performance.

Cake that I bought just now 😁 They also had a strawberry tart, which I really considered buying cause of @arthursseat, but I decided to go with something more New Year like (sorry!)

This is the third time I've watched 紅白, and this is the third time I've seen Golden Bomber perform 女々しくて

The performance is always different each year though.

This year, they did a sumo match.

By the way, I'm gonna go ahead and make a guess: the team that Arashi is on is gonna be the team that wins 紅白

Finally figured out how much pandan leaf and sugar to put so the tang yuan soup tastes nice 😋😋😋 But still gonna add peanuts hahaha

Gonna miss the pandan leaves and tang yuan when they're gone. But I guess if I had them all the time, I wouldn't cherish them as much.

Ending the year (half an hour more) with my new game 😍😍😍

Still listening to Kouhaku though. Just not watching hahaha

Japanese Word of the Day: 良いお年を (よいおとしを; yoi otoshi wo)

Before I forget, here's the #Japanesewordfortheday 😁 Although once I introduce this, next year I'll have nothing to say hahaha.

Anyway, before the new year, a very common greeting is 良いお年を (よいおとしを; yoi otoshi wo). It means "have a good (new) year", and basically, you're wishing someone to have a Happy New Year.

But, this word can only be used until Dec 31st. Once Jan 1st comes, the word can no longer be used, and instead, there's yet another expression.

Normally, this phrase is used as you say goodbye to someone that you won't see until next year. So for example, my cooking classmates and I thought I wouldn't be able to make it to December class. So the parting phrase was "はやいですけど、良いお年を (hayai desu kedo, yoi otoshi wo)" - "it's early, but have a happy new year".

But generally, this phrase appears in December.

In hindsight, I should have introduced this word a lot earlier, but well... I guess you can use this word next year? 😅

rachelgreen You seem to favour the fantasy genre. I like certain titles from Jodi Picoult. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent was one of the books i particularly enjoyed this year.

eustaciatan @rachelgreen Fantasy and Crime are my two great loves, though I read anything except erotica hahaha. It's more like... I think fantasy moves me the most? I probably read more crime/mystery than anything

rachelgreen I love reading True Crime too but am picky. I might pick up The Innocent Killer by Michael Griesbach when I've settled well in the new year.
